Tradition

The tradition, or parampara, that Tonči and Ana are carrying on is the Naga Sadhu parampara. The knowledge of this tradition has always been passed down orally through initiations, from Master to disciple, so there are no written records of it.
What is known to the public is that in the 8th century, Adi Shankaracharya organized the Naga Sadhus into 10 different Akharas or associations. Adi Shankaracharya was a great teacher of Advaita Vedanta – a non-dual philosophy and a practitioner of Tantra. Each of the 10 Akharas has the same goal, Moksha or Mukti (spiritual enlightenment), the preservation of sacred knowledge and the protection of Dharma (the universal law that maintains order in Creation).
Naga Sadhus and Naga Sadhvis (women who have received their initiation), do not have conventional jobs, live in celibacy, are completely dedicated to their sadhana – practice and life in accordance with the principles of Dharma. The core of their sadhana are Vedic mantras, rituals and Tantra.
The Babaji who awakened the knowledge of the tradition in Tonči and Ana is Bhola Das. He became a Naga Sadhu at the age of 10 (now 70) and went through the whole process of mantra and Tantra long ago.
Another Sadhu who is responsible for their awakening is Madhava Muni. He lived in Varanasi for 25 years, now he has a small ashram near his hometown.
